Demonstration of battery metals recovery from primary and secondary resources through a sustainable processing methodology
There is a need for critical raw materials (CRM) and metals due to their economic importance. Specifically, the battery sector is considered key for the EU due to the increase in its use in different important sectors such as electric mobility.
Thus, METALLICO, a European research project, co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe program, will enable the recovery of battery metals from primary and secondary resources and through a sustainable processing methodology.
The project is made up of a strategic consortium throughout the value chain, which includes mining industries with primary and secondary sources of critical metals and/or present in the manufacture of batteries (Li, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni); experienced partners in the development and demonstration of novel processes to produce or recover metals; potential industrial end users and SMEs interested in using the metals produced or recovered; and partners who will study strategies to improve the social perception of mining and resource recovery, as well as study the sustainability and commercial possibilities that the solution represents.
METALLICO presents a new strategic opportunity for the European Union to reduce dependence on external markets for the supply of CRM, betting on production and recovery of primary and secondary resources based on sustainability and innovation.
