ALERT-PFAS

Transnational strategy to detect and prevent PFAS pollution

ALERT-PFAS

ALERT-PFAS is a transnational initiative funded by the EU through the Interreg SUDOE cooperation program to combat PFAS pollutants (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as “forever chemicals,” which affect the environment and human health. The project aims primarily to design and implement a strategy to detect, prevent, and mitigate PFAS pollution in the natural spaces of the SUDOE region (Spain, Portugal, and Southwest France), as well as to mitigate its effects on ecosystems.

The project offers an innovative solution for detecting and monitoring PFAS in real time and preventing them from entering the water cycle, contaminating the air, soil, and water. Pilot actions will be developed in natural parks or protected areas of Portugal, Spain, and France, affected by recent fires, as one of the major emitters of PFAS into the environment are the foams used in firefighting.
