WATERSOURCE

Demonstration of a Climate-Resilient Drinking Water Source Using Nature-Based Solutions

Project website

WATERSOURCE

The LIFE WATERSOURCE europe project demonstrates the potential of an innovative combination of nature-based solutions (NBS) for the production of drinking water from surface water in Lake IJsselmeer (Netherlands). The aim is to improve water quality for potable use, particularly at the nutrient level, while promoting the ecological enhancement of the lake, preserving biodiversity, and maintaining ecosystem service provision.

In Barcelona, Aigües de Barcelona, CETAQUA, and AQUATEC will study the technical and economic feasibility of replicating the Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) applied in the Dutch case for the treatment and management of water from the Rubí stream. This initiative is presented as a strategy to increase the availability of water resources in the aquifer from which the wells of the Sant Joan Despí Water Treatment Plant (WTP) draw, and to improve the water quality of the Rubí stream. Additionally, these measures result not only in an improvement of water resources but also in an increase in biodiversity and green spaces that citizens can enjoy.
